About the Alberta Kennel Club The Alberta Kennel Club, an all-breed dog club, was founded in 1904 by a group of Sporting Dog enthusiasts. It is the one of the oldest continually operated kennel clubs in Canada with a modest membership of 50 dedicated volunteers. The purpose of the AKC is to promote the betterment and welfare of purebred dogs by encouraging responsible breeding and ownership as well as sportsmanlike conduct. To achieve this multi-faceted purpose, the AKC actively sponsors organizations that conduct pet visitations and breeder referrals, and has been holding two sets of dog shows for over 30 years. The shows are typically held in February and July/August. The AKC's 100th Anniversary shows, held July/August 2004, were the largest for that year and the largest outdoor shows ever in Canada. All AKC shows are run by volunteers: from approval and organization of shows, right down to the physical tasks of setup and takedown. The AKC holds educational seminars for members. Meetings are held every second Wednesday of every month from September to May; new members and volunteers are always welcome. Membership in the Alberta Kennel Club offers individuals numerous opportunities to become involved in the dog fancy through active participation in the organization of dog shows.
